COUNTY THEATRE COMPETITION|DOYLESTOWN, PA

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

COMPETITION FOR THE EXPANSION OF THE HISTORIC COUNTY THEATRE

Nestled in the heart of Doylestown, PA, the county seat of Bucks County, the County Theatre has been a historic fixture serving the town and surrounding area since 1938. The open competition asked designers to provide an additional theater, concession stand, lobby, and second floor administrative spaces on the adjacent lot. My design submission chose to allow the theatre to continue to be the main architectural feature and the addition echoed elements of the enameled Art Deco facade without mimicking it. The stair connecting the main floor to the administrative floor extends outward, becoming a feature on its own. The rotating metal fins conceal a water collection system to support the surrounding vegetation and the fins change color throughout the day and provide a visual response through all four seasons.
